More Information on the Virginia Energy Efficient Rebate
Update: the allocated funds have been used up. The government is working on allocating more funding to the VA State Energy Plan. For more information and news, click here.
If you're thinking of getting new energy efficient windows, doors, or siding in your Northern VA home, or got them earlier this year (after June 26th), you qualify for a Virginia rebate of 20% of the costs, up to $2,000! That's also on top of the $1,500 federal tax credit you qualify for if you got replacement windows! So, to help you get the most out of your windows, we're getting you all the information you need to make sure you get the rebate.
The First thing you need to do is make sure your windows qualify. The windows have to have a U factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of less than or equal to 0.30. For example, if you got Alside windows, here's a quick list of all their windows that meet those requirements.
You must also provide documentation that your window is energy rated by furnishing the manufacturer certification statement. We will work with all of our customers to make sure they have this documentation.

From the website of the Virginia Department of Mines Minerals and Energy:
Replacement windows, doors and skylights
- Eligibility requirements.
- U factor <= 0.30
- SHGC <= 0.30
- Windows, doors, and skylights purchased on or after June 1, 2009 must have U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings of 0.30 or less. These ratings must be certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Look for the NFRC label. NFRC is the only federally recognized organization for determining the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. Please see the NFRC website for information concerning product performance. Homeowners must obtain a manufacturer certification statement to document window, door, or skylight eligibility for the rebate. If the retailer or installer cannot provide this document, it may be available on the manufacturer's Web site.

The only source of information on eligibility and other requirements to qualify for a Virginia energy rebate is the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy website, here: http://www.dmme.virginia.gov/DE/ARRA-Public/SEPRebate.shtml)
- Not all Energy Star labeled windows, doors and skylights qualify for the rebate: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_windows
- Amount of rebate: 20 percent of the total cost of equipment and labor, not to exceed $2,000 ($4,000 for commercial).
- Windows, doors or skylights must replace existing windows, doors or skylights. The purpose of the rebate program is to replace older less efficient equipment that currently is in use with new more energy efficient equipment.
- The contractor must estimate the energy benefits for the expected life of the windows that will result from the retrofit and show the methodology used to make the calculations.
- Only purchases made on or after June 26, 2009, and which meet all other program requirements, are eligible for consideration.
